Nigeria’s suspended central bank governor detain by security agency

Nigeria’s suspended central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has been detained by the police’s Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS said on Saturday that Emefiele who was suspended by the new president is being held in custody for investigative reasons.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons,” the DSS statement said.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele with immediate effect on Friday but his permanent removal would require a vote by the Senate.

The government said it was linked to an ongoing probe of the governor’s office and planned reforms in the financial sector.

Just before this year’s election that saw Tinubu elected his allies accused the governor of trying to sabotage their campaign with the policy to swap old naira bank notes that caused severe cash shortages and triggered public anger.
